The Department of General Surgery of the Fourth Affiliated Hospital, Zhengjiang University School of Medicine consists of 7 sub-specialties including hepatobiliary and pancreas surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, thyroid surgery, breast surgery, vascular surgery, colorectal surgery, and hernia and abdominal surgery. This department acts as an assistant group leader of the tumor ablation standardization training program carried out by Chinese Medical Doctor Association and the vice-chairman of the Professional Committee of Tumor Ablation, Zhejiang Anti-cancer Association. Its medical team comprises 3 doctoral supervisors, 13 senior doctors and 12 associate senior doctors. All employees have a Master’s degree or above. Nearly 10 thousand people undergo surgery in the department each year, and especially, the number of radical ablation operations performed for complex liver cancer is leading in China. The center provides not only routine complicated operations such as radical surgery for spreading liver cancer and multivisceral resection for pancreatic cancer, but also extensive minimally invasive operations such as minimally invasive resection and ablation of liver cancer, laparoscopic radical resection of gastric cancer, intestinal cancer and pancreatic cancer, radical resection of gastrointestinal tumor without an abdominal incision, sphincter preservation operation in super-low rectal carcinoma, minimally invasive scarless thyroidectomy, endovascular repair of aortic dissection and vein ablation surgery. The center also has comprehensive cooperation with many affiliated hospitals of Zhejiang University School of Medicine in Hangzhou, multiple grade-A tertiary hospitals in Shanghai and Beijing, and multiple top-level international hospitals in the United States, and holds online multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings on difficult cases. In the scientific research aspect, members of the center have taken charge of multiple national scientific research projects during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020), national natural science foundation projects, provincial key research and development projects, and provincial key projects of natural science, with the project funds exceeding 10 million yuan. Meanwhile, over a hundred papers have been published internationally and the impact factor of many of these papers is higher than 20. The center is responsible for cultivating doctors, masters, and bachelors for Zhejiang University, and serves as a national-level surgical training base for standardized training of resident doctors.
